Discomfort, Pain, and Suffering

The terms “discomfort,” “pain,” and “suffering” refer to the same phenomena—an unwelcome physical experience or emotional feeling. What differentiates the three from each other is the length of time your loved one experiences each and its intensity. Medication can be a blessing for pain and suffering one day and inconsequential the next. There is jubilation when the pain stops or becomes manageable, but the fear the reprieve will end tempers joy. On bad days, your loved one may fear the pain will never relent and become a feature dominating her life. We think of pain as bounded by a beginning and an end point, but the emotional aspects of pain are porous, affecting thinking not only during the experience but before and after the pain stops. You can use a distraction to reduce the intensity of the pain, but you may be limited to compassionately witnessing it. Your loved one can learn from discomfort, pain, or suffering, but avoid suggesting anything positive in the experience when it is occurring.
